General
Mission: The Society exists to provide protection for unwanted or
abused animals in Littleton and the surrounding areas of northern New Hampshire
and Vermont. The Society also has a responsibility for public education in
the areas of animal care and welfare.
Means
for accomplishing the Mission
1.
Ongoing Programs: Assist in the placement of stray or unwanted animals;
Provide medical treatment for stray or abused animals; Sponsor obedience classes
for behavior management of pets; Provide pet food for low income families;
Promote spay/neuter and rabies clinics; Develop working relationships with local
veterinarians; Support foster care where appropriate.
2.
Long Range Planning: If practical, future plans may include building a
shelter to house homeless animals. This would be a no-kill facility.
However, if an animal is deemed unadoptable, due to behavioral or medical
reasons, euthanasia could be employed as a last resort.
The
Above the Notch Humane Society was established due to an ever-increasing need
for an animal shelter for Littleton and the immediately surrounding area.
We have gained non-profit corporation status in the state of
New Hampshire, gained tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service (501
(c)3 status), and run our own shelter.
We
want to thank Kim Butler, Esq. and the law firm of
Downs,
Martin, and Rachlin for providing pro bono legal services
to
help us establish ourselves as a charitable institution.
In
March of 2001 Dr. Kim Koprowski and others had to make an immediate
rescue of 24 cats from inhumane conditions. These cats were in great need
of medical care and immediate placement. Because of situations such as
this, it was evident that a shelter was needed in the Littleton area.
We
receive constant requests to take in homeless or unwanted pets, and are only
able to help a small percentage of the needy animals in this area. Our
homeless cats are being housed at this time in our veterinarian's
facility, and dogs are housed in a local kennel. Hopefully we will be able to build a shelter of our own at some
point.
Even
though the Above the Notch Humane Society currently has no facility of its own,
hundreds of animals have been rescued and placed in new homes since March 2001.
Future
plans for the Society include establishing a network of foster care homes for
our homeless animals, and building a new facility to house our animals.
