ATNHS was established in March of 2001.  We are a no-kill humane society for Littleton and surrounding towns, that seeks to provide assistance:

  • To needy animals with food, shelter, socialization and veterinary care.
  • To the community with regular obedience classes, adoption support, education on animal care and promotion of a spay/neuter program.
  • To other area animal shelters and rescue leagues by supporting their programs and assisting with their needs.

The Story of George

George is a 2-3 year old rotti/shar pei who was found after being struck by a vehicle. He sustained a fractured pelvis. He has healed quite well and does very well on a leash. George is a sweet guy who has bonded with some of the young people who work with him. He can give a lot of love and affection.

The ATNHS relies solely on donations and fundraising to care for our animals. This is the story of George, who came to us as a stray with a fractured hip and in need of immediate medical care. It took many months of care before George was healthy enough to be considered for adoption. George came to us in April of 2009 and is still waiting for a forever home.

When a Stray Dog Comes to ATNHS...

Stray dogs come to the ATNHS from many of the surrounding towns. If the dog is not claimed after 10 days, he or she becomes available for adoption. Each dog starts out with a visit to the vet. The dog is brought up to date on vaccinations and any medical needs are attended to. The dogs are then scheduled to be neutered or spayed. During the first week that the stray dog is at the ATNHS, he or she adapts to their new environment and gets to know the staff at Littleton Pet Center and Kennel. Once the dog has seen a vet they are put on our website, Pet Finder and promoted in a variety of ways.

The Adoption Process

The ATNHS is located at Littleton Pet Center and Kennel. The adoption process involves a written application and an interview with one or more members of our Adoption Team. We ask for and check vet and personal references. We ask that all members of the potential adoptive family, and any family dogs, come to visit with the Adoption Team and with the dog they are considering adopting.

Our goal is to make the first adoption the best and final adoption, and our priority is what is best for the dog. Most dogs don’t stay with us for a year, but each dog requires care that far exceeds adoption fees. This is where we rely on donations, large and small, in order to continue working towards our mission.

George has come a long way in the year that he has been with us, thanks to the Littleton Pet Center and Kennel staff, volunteers, and donations given to the ATNHS. George needs just one more thing...a forever home!

Please visit Littleton Pet Center and Kennel at 1985 St. Johnsbury Rd, or call 444-6285. You may also call ATNHS at 444-6241 if you have any questions about George or any of our wonderful dogs!
